Resveratrol improves health (Vitamin D receptor, etc.) - many studies

  • The Vitamin D Receptor can restrict how much of the Vitamin D in the blood actually gets to cells
  • Resveratrol is one of 14+ ways to negate the Vitamin D Receptor restrictions
  • Resveratrol is produced by several plants in response to injury or, when the plant is under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi
  • Benefits of Resveratrol, like Vitamin D, appear to be increased when used with other things
    • Quercetin and Curcumin in the case of Resveratrol

How to increase VDR activation

Compensate for poor VDR by increasing one or more:

IncreasingIncreases
1) Vitamin D supplement  Sun
Ultraviolet -B
Vitamin D in the blood
and thus in the cells
2) MagnesiumVitamin D in the blood
 AND in the cells
3) Omega-3 Vitamin D in the cells
4) Resveratrol Vitamin D Receptor
5) Intense exercise Vitamin D Receptor
6) Get prescription for VDR activator
   paricalcitol, maxacalcitol?
Vitamin D Receptor
7) Quercetin (flavonoid) Vitamin D Receptor
8) Zinc is in the VDRVitamin D Receptor
9) BoronVitamin D Receptor ?,
etc
10) Essential oils e.g. ginger, curcuminVitamin D Receptor
11) ProgesteroneVitamin D Receptor
12) Infrequent high concentration Vitamin D
Increases the concentration gradient
Vitamin D Receptor
13) Sulfroaphane and perhaps sulfurVitamin D Receptor
14) Butyrate especially gutVitamin D Receptor
15) BerberineVitamin D Receptor

Note: If you are not feeling enough benefit from Vitamin D, you might try increasing VDR activation. You might feel the benefit within days of adding one or more of the above

Vitamin D blood test misses a lot
in Visio for 2023

  • Vitamin D from coming from tissues (vs blood) was speculated to be 50% in 2014, and by 2017 was speculated to be 90%
  • Note: Good blood test results (> 40 ng) does not mean that a good amount of Vitamin D actually gets to cells
  • A Vitamin D test in cells rather than blood was feasible (2017 personal communication)   Commercially available 2019
    • However, test results would vary in each tissue due to multiple genes
  • Good clues that Vitamin D is being restricted from getting to the cells
    1) A vitamin D-related health problem runs in the family
especially if it is one of 51+ diseases related to Vitamin D Receptor
    2) Slightly increasing Vitamin D shows benefits (even if conventional Vitamin D test shows an increase)
    3) DNA and VDR tests - 120 to 200 dollars $100 to $250
    4) PTH bottoms out ( shows that parathyroid cells are getting Vitamin d)
Genes are good, have enough Magnesium, etc.
    5) Back Pain
probably want at least 2 clues before taking adding vitamin D, Omega-3, Magnesium, Resveratrol, etc

Resveratrol has a few problems for some people - Dr. Greger 4 video and transcript June 2024

Side Effects of Resveratrol Supplements Dr. Greger

  • Some studies have found that in increases LDL cholesterol by 25%
  • " Daily doses of resveratrol in excess of a gram commonly cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, as well as “anal itchiness.”
  • "Two studies, however, found that so-called “safe” levels of resveratrol (at 150 to 250 mg a day) may blunt some of the positive effects of exercise training"

Resveratrol is mainly found in grapes and red wine, also in some plants and fruits, such as peanuts, cranberries, pistachios, blueberries and bilberries. Moreover, nowadays this compound is available as purified preparation and dietary supplement. Resveratrol provides a wide range of benefits, including

  • cardiovascular protective,
  • antiplatelet,
  • antioxidant,
  • antiinflammatory,
  • blood glucose-lowering and
  • anticancer activities,

hence it exhibits a complex mode of action. During the recent years, these properties have been widely studied in animal and human models, both in vitro and in vivo. This paper is intended to present information published during the recent years on the biological activities and multiple effects of resveratrol.

Extensive overview

  • "The therapeutic dose of resveratrol ranges from 8.1 mg per day to 3,000 mg per day.
Studies in humans suggest resveratrol can be supplemented at dosages up to 5 grams (5,000 mg) daily with few to no side effects outside of some intestinal upset and nausea."

Does not appear to mention that it is an activator of the Vitamin D receptor, nor mention the more bio-available forms of Resveratrol

Asked ChatGPT: What are the downsides to taking Resveratrol - Dec 2023

Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in certain plants and fruits, is often taken as a supplement for its potential health benefits. However, like any supplement, resveratrol can have downsides and side effects, particularly at higher doses or when taken in certain circumstances:

  1. Gastrointestinal Issues: High doses of resveratrol can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and other digestive issues. These effects are generally associated with doses higher than those achievable through diet alone, often occurring with supplement consumption 1  2
  2. Drug Interactions: Resveratrol may interact with several medications. It can inhibit cytochrome 3A4, potentially causing interactions with a range of medications including HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (used to lower cholesterol), calcium channel agonists, anti-arrhythmic agents, HIV protease inhibitors, immunosuppressants, antihistamines, and erectile dysfunction medications. Additionally, its natural blood pressure-lowering and anti-coagulant effects might interact with blood pressure medications, anti-platelet drugs, anticoagulants, and NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen 3  4
  3. Estrogenic Effects: Resveratrol has shown both estrogen agonist and antagonist effects in cell culture studies, and its chemical structure is similar to synthetic estrogen agonists. This characteristic can be problematic for individuals with estrogen-dependent tumors, such as those found in prostate and breast cancers. These tumors have many estrogen receptors and rely on the hormone for growth. Hence, individuals at risk for tumor growth should be cautious about concentrated resveratrol supplements 5  6.
  4. Joint Pain and Tendinitis: Some people have reported joint pain and tendinitis with resveratrol use, commonly affecting the Achilles tendon and other joint areas, sometimes accompanied by tingling and numbness in limbs 7  8
  5. Other Potential Side Effects: These include jittery feelings similar to excessive caffeine intake, insomnia, flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches and cramps, blood in the urine, and, in rare cases, an increase in arthritis pain. These symptoms are not universally experienced and may vary from person to person 9.

It's important to note that while some of these side effects are more commonly reported, others are rare or based on anecdotal evidence. The overall safety and side effects can vary greatly depending on the individual, the dosage, and other factors such as concurrent medication use or existing health conditions. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, including resveratrol, to ensure it is safe based on your personal health profile.
